Talal Abu-Ghazaleh
Today, Jordan stands before unprecedented challenges in its
modern history, despite its continued distinguished place in the Middle East.
Across the region, tensions are accumulating, conflicts are becoming extended,
economic challenges are increasing, and partnerships are shifting in unexpected
ways. Such a reality calls for calm leadership and a thoughtful vision, rather
than quick or temporary solutions. Despite all of this, the Hashemite Kingdom
of Jordan continues to play a pivotal role in achieving regional stability, guided
by a long-term vision led by His Majesty King Abdullah II.
This vision is rooted in an
enduring legacy of values inherited from his father, the late His Majesty King
Hussein bin Talal, with whom I had the honor of establishing a close
relationship. His leadership was marked by the ability to overcome challenges
with poise and wisdom, embodying the essence of a great statesman, capable of
addressing the issues of his people and the region with contemporary
understanding and profound awareness.
Jordan faces ongoing crises along
its shared borders, imposing unique security and humanitarian pressures upon
the Kingdom. Over years of wise diplomacy, it has earned an enduring reputation
as a reliable partner; while His Majesty King Abdullah II has successfully
achieved a delicate balance in relations with both regional and international
parties. This balance is exceptionally difficult to attain, yet it has been
achieved with mastery, profound insight, and wise judgment.
The unresolved Palestinian cause
remains the central challenge to regional stability, especially in light of the
horrific genocide being committed against the people of Gaza Strip. A lasting
peace demands an internationally recognized framework with the active
participation of the Palestinian people themselves, rather than solutions
imposed by external powers. Any alternative proposals would only lead to
further escalation, a point His Majesty was entirely correct to warn against
during his international meetings, where he expressed his position with
absolute firmness and clarity. Jordan's role in this context is uniquely shaped
by its demographic, geographical, and historical ties with the Palestinian
people. Moreover, the Hashemite Custodianship of the Islamic and Christian holy
sites in Jerusalem is not merely a religious responsibility, but rather a
profound political and diplomatic one. I also express my deepest admiration for
how His Majesty the King defends this custodianship in international forums
with unwavering determination and definite clarity.
Jordan’s security institutions
have developed strong capabilities in border protection and counter-terrorism, pivotal
efforts that cannot succeed without a solid foundation of domestic stability.
His Majesty the King has repeatedly emphasized the importance of economic
reform, public administration modernization, job creation, and the improvement
of public services. Undoubtedly, achieving these goals was never easy, and
progress has at times been slower than expected. It is necessary to acknowledge
these challenges with honesty and to identify their root causes without fear of
reaction. Economic pressures, especially youth unemployment, remain a major
concern. Addressing them requires serious cooperation between the public and
private sectors, alongside a steadfast commitment to long-term planning; an
approach that, Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Global Digital (TAG.GD), is profoundly
dedicated to.
Despite the challenges, Jordan
continues to host successive waves of refugees and displaced persons on its
soil, which pose severe pressure on its resources and infrastructure; especially
in light of declining foreign aid combined with escalating needs. The region
will remain vulnerable to instability, making it imperative for Jordan to
strengthen its domestic resilience. His Majesty the King has consistently
called for a fair burden-sharing, a stance that is both logical and just, as a
nation of Jordan’s size cannot shoulder these responsibilities without
sustained external support.
I firmly believe that His
Majesty’s focus on reform, moderation, education, and constructive diplomacy
provides a realistic path for the future. My personal meetings with him have
shown that his leadership is founded on patience and responsibility; two values
that have long guided this nation’s journey.
The role of the Hashemite Kingdom
of Jordan will remain fundamental as long as the region suffers from
fragmentation and division. The task is difficult, yet essential, requiring the
active participation of all Jordanians who believe that the stability of their
homeland, the prosperity of the region, and our shared future are all worth
working and striving for, under such a noble and wise leadership.
