Welcome to the 12th
European Management
Conference!

In our constantly evolving world, where an abundance of knowledge and skills is at hand, guidance is crucial, and has thus to be provided by adequate leadership.  While commonly limited to the human aspect, leadership is much more than just about people.  Companies, organizations, as well as individuals are lead by concepts.  As such, the EMC 2006 emphasizes the multidimensional perspective of leadership – focusing on its personal and conceptual approaches and adding a cultural dimension.

The idea of personal leadership concentrates on people being efficient leaders: Does an efficient leader need certain skills, abilities, or even gifts?  Is management different to leadership and if so, in which way?  How does one become a leader?  Can anyone be a leader?  On the other hand, the conceptual idea examines organizational leadership: How do certain companies or institutions manage leadership in an evolving world? How do they maintain a leading position in saturated markets?  What does leadership mean to family businesses?  The cultural dimension of leadership embraces both approaches: What are the challenges in leading an enterprise on a global scale?  Is leadership strictly cultural, or does it have universal components?  As an overall aspect, one question remains crucial: What is the best route to leadership for a young professional? While the emphasis will be laid on personal examples and existing concepts, the conference will present different ways to support future leaders in their quest for leadership.

The theme for the 12th annual European Management Conference is “Quest for Leadership”, a quest that is simultaneously universal and enigmatic.  Like the existential search for meaning, the quest for leadership is understood by all, but often in different ways.  We all know what we mean by leadership, but we may mean different things.  Leadership has proved extraordinarily difficult to define, but we all know a leader when we see one.  The quest for leadership is a reflection of an abiding human social struggle to master a complex environment and meet the challenges posed by life itself.  Leadership can be seen as the purified distillate of a complex network of human interaction, within a given context.  What does “The Quest for Leadership,” mean to you?  Does it mean that you are a student or young professional seeking to develop the qualities of and/or attain a position of leadership?  Does it reflect the individual, societal, or corporate search for leadership that can help fulfill individual or group demands and values?  Is it the search of business leaders for new leadership talent to build leadership cadres?

Is it the search for greater dedication, commitment, or caring?  Is it the search for a pioneer or an innovator?  Leaders come in all flavors, sizes, and styles.  They can be outgoing and charismatic or indifferent and gloomy.  They can be daring and original, or cautious and unimaginative.  The one thing that is certain is that leaders are necessary and we don’t have to look hard to find them, because they tend to emerge on their own, whether on the playground, in the corporation, or on the national or global political stage.  But understanding leadership and meeting one’s own leadership goals may require analysis, reflection, and your attendance at the 12th annual Perspective Europe Conference. Please join us for what I know will be a stimulating and enjoyable round of discussions and networking opportunities.
