AMMAN - H.E. Dr. Talal
Abu-Ghazaleh, Chairman of Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Global
Digital (TAG.GD), has issued a strong statement of support for the convergences
outlined in the Revised Co-Chairs’ Elements Paper on UN Security Council reform
produced as a result of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly,
calling it an opportunity to restore the Council’s legitimacy and relevance in
a world that must not tolerate selective justice.
Dr. Abu-Ghazaleh welcomed the
broad Member States’ agreement on the urgent need to make the Security Council
more inclusive and accountable, emphasizing that the Council must reflect the
realities of the 21st century and not the power dynamics of 1945.
“The will of the Global South
is rising and the world is changing. Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Arab
world must no longer be sidelined in decisions that shape our collective
destiny,” said Dr. Abu-Ghazaleh. “We must reform the Council not as a
procedural exercise, but as a moral obligation to humanity.”
Dr. Abu-Ghazaleh underscored
the ongoing tragedy in Gaza as a stark example of the Council’s paralysis and
the consequences of veto abuse. He called for an end to the bypassing of
Council resolutions by any state, asserting that such actions undermine the
very foundation of international law.
“The genocide in Gaza is not
just a regional crisis, it is a miserable failing of our ability to uphold
justice for the oppressed. The Security Council must be empowered to act
decisively and its decisions must be respected by all. No nation should be
above the law.”
Dr. Abu-Ghazaleh praised the
process for identifying key areas of convergence, including:
The need for increased
representation of developing countries.
The recognition that all five
reform areas including, membership categories, veto power, regional
representation, working methods, and General Assembly Council relations,
are all interlinked.
The call for a consolidated
reform model that moves from theory to action.
He also commended the Pact for
the Future for its unprecedented clarity and commitment to reform, describing
it as the strongest language on Council reform in a generation.
“We stand with the people of
the Global South, with the victims of injustice and with every Member State
that seeks to make the United Nations a true house of nations, not just a gated
estate for the powerful,” Dr. Abu-Ghazaleh declared.
He went onto say “As a global
institution rooted with international service, TAG.Global reaffirms its support
for principled multilateralism, the democratization of global governance and
the need for a modern UN Security Council.”
He concluded by urging Member
States to move swiftly toward a consolidated reform model, warning that delay
is no longer an option and that the UN Security Council must change in order to
remain a relevant international institution representing the interest of all
world nations.
