A survey published March,28 by the Arabic-English Web portal Ajeeb.com reported that more than 3.5 million people in the Arab world are using the Internet. Quoting the survey, the Arab News of March, 29 ranked the United Arab Emirates as having the highest number of users, 660,000, representing 24.4 percent of the population. The UAE was followed in number of users by Saudi Arabia and Egypt, while the user percentage relative to population placed Bahrain (16.7 percent), Qatar (10.3 percent) and Kuwait (8.2 percent) after the UAE. The survey predicted that up to 12 million people will be logging on by the end of 2002. Meanwhile the Arabic Internet Names Consortium (AINC) was set up at a meeting in Amman to Arabize domain names and facilitate Internet access by Arabic speakers. The organizers of the meeting, Talal Abu-Ghazaleh International (TAGI), said that Arabic would become one of the languages that could be used for registering domain names later this year.
