At the ICANN Board of Directors meetings held in Marina Del Rey, California, during the period November 13-17, 2000, AGIP, represented by Mr. Luay Abu-Ghazaleh, joined the Intellectual Property Constituency (IPC).
The Arab Society for Intellectual Property (ASIP) applied for membership as a regional organization. The Intellectual Property Constituency is one of DNSO constituencies (such as the Business Constituency), but it represents the intellectual property sector.
The IPC is an integral part of the DNSO according to Article VI-B, Section 3 of the ICANN by-laws.
The purpose of the IPC is to represent the views and interests of IP users world-wide with particular emphasis on trademark, copyright, related intellectual property rights and their effect and interaction with the Domain Name System (DNS), as well as to ensure that the views, including minority views, are reflected in the recommendations made by the Names Council to the Board of the ICANN.
More particularly, the IPC reviews and raises all IP matters including any proposals, issues, legislation, or otherwise, which may affect intellectual property (IP), particularly as it interfaces with the DNS, and to provide to the DNSO and the ICANN Board timely and expert advice before it makes any decision or take any position thereon.
