The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) pledged to use the resources of the World Trade Organization (WTO) to exploit the benefits of the digital age for the developing countries.
A press release issued by the ICC quoted from Mr. Talal Abu-Ghazaleh, new Chairman of the Information and Communications and Technology (ICT) Committee, that the Committee will focus its efforts on the development of competitive telecommunication services in the world to bridge the digital divide.
Mr. Abu-Ghazaleh added that the ICC will work through its members and in cooperation with other international organizations to ensure vast potentials for the Internet to achieve progress and prosperity throughout the world.
He also said that this matter requires economic and structural reforms on a large scale in the developing countries and it also requires the development of the infrastructure, most importantly the education.
Mr. Abu-Ghazaleh emphasized the role of governments to increase the ability of individuals in developing countries to access the Internet. He said while businesses can develop information and telecommunication networks, the matter goes to the government to create the appropriate regulatory environment.
He added that businesses sector can overcome the digital divide, and it is up to governments to make this goal easier to accomplish. Mr. Abu-Ghazaleh pointed out that the Internet offers great opportunities for societies and entrepreneurs to reach to the global economy.
